Supporting the FCDO's TravelAware Campaign

At Alistair Cole Consulting, we proudly support the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office’s (FCDO) TravelAware campaign. This important initiative helps UK travellers stay informed, prepared, and safe when heading abroad. 


Our team have been long-time partners of the campaign, dating back to its earlier days as the Know Before You Go initiative. The goal has always been the same: reduce preventable problems by raising awareness and encouraging smarter travel habits.

Helping travellers avoid trouble abroad


Most of the common issue’s travellers face, from missed flights to costly medical bills, can be avoided with some simple preparation. That’s where we come in.


As a TravelAware partner, we share important guidance across our platforms and make sure our clients are armed with key information before they jet off. Whether you’re planning a short city break or a big overseas adventure, taking precautions can make a world of difference.


Tips for safe and informed travel:


  • Buy the right travel insurance – Even if it’s just a quick break, make sure your policy covers your destination and the activities you’ll be doing.
  • Visit your GP early – Book a travel health appointment at least 6 weeks before departure to discuss vaccinations and get any necessary health advice.
  • Do your research – Learn about local laws, customs, and safety risks before you go. The FCDO’s Foreign TravelAdvice provides up-to-date details by country.
  • Protect your documents – Photocopy your passport, visas, and insurance paperwork. Keep one copy with you (separately from the originals) and leave another with someone at home.
  • Save key numbers – Store the 24/7 emergency assistance line from your insurer in your phone, just in case.

  • Alerts about countries the FCDO advises avoiding
  • Guidance on what the British Consulate can (and can’t) do if something goes wrong
  • Checklists for specific traveller groups: students, older travellers, women, LGBT+ travellers, and more

While the TravelAware message applies to everyone, some travellers are statistically more likely to run into problems abroad. The FCDO has tailored its outreach to groups such as:

  • Young travellers (18-30s, especially on stag and hen do’s)
  • Older travellers and retirees
  • Sports fans travelling to events
  • Gap year students
  • British minority ethnic communities
  • Independent travellers (who don’t use a travel agent)
