For many years, the publication, “Health and Safety of Pupils on Educational Visits” (HASPEV) and its supplements were the “bible” for school trips and visits. The Government subsequently slimmed down the guidance to less than twenty pages, resulting in newspaper headlines considering the wisdom of that approach.
Various guidance has since been generated including BS:8848, Expedition Provider’s Association safety standards, Outdoor Education Advisor’s Panel and Learning Outside the Classroom badges. The guidance can be somewhat of a maze and finding “good practice” can be confusing given all the material now available from disparate sources.
